Concert of Authentic Ukrainian and Russian Folk Songs

Wedding Songs and Rituals:A little over a year ago, while I was still living in Riga, Latvia, the Bozhychi Ensemble from Kyiv came to do a concert of wedding songs and rituals with the Riga-based Russian folk ensemble, Il'inksaja Pjatnytsa. The structure for the concert was that of a Ukrainian Cossack marrying a Russian bride. In the footage, the people on the left of the stage are from Bozhychi and on the right are the Il'inskaja members--but you can also tell them apart based on what language they sing and speak in! Also, Il'inskaja Pjatnytsa is made up of women, while Bozhychi Ensemble has both men and women performers. One should be able to follow the mini-drama rather easily. Presented are typical wedding songs and a re-enactment of negotiations for the marriage, which finally happens in the end. Also, note that this is just a snippet of the full concert, of course. This was a rare occasion to see two excellent, highly regarded ensembles singing together. Both of these ensembles are uncompromisingly dedicated to village-based authenticity in their performances. A note authenticity: To my mind, authenticity doesn't mean old; it refers to how people sing and dance in villages today as much as what we might imagine how they danced in the world of "back then." Authenticity is not a matter of content so much as it is of style. The authentic is the style of village-based players versuses what I call the Sovietski Bullshitski style—i.e., that style of adding a lot of arrangement and harmony to the music, and too much choreography, too much ballet and too much classical technique to the dancing. In sum, authenticity is a refusal of too much music-school refinement, and an affirmation of village-based rawness, with all of its (at times out-of-tune) virtuosity. As summarized on Il'inskaja Pjatnytsa's site, in a not-so-great English translation from the site: "The word 'authentic' is possibility to distinguish the real tradition from its imitation. It is gigantic work, but it's our life." One can choose to sing and dance in the village style, or to imitate it with too much flowery rendition, as in the Sovietski Bullshitski style. Tradition is a style. Authenticity is a matter of style. New content can always be added, but the style must not be forgotten and the authentic must not be confused for what is the product of music and ballet schools, and for what is still presented by so many big folk ensembles. links: http://folklora.lv/kopas/elija... http://www.pjatnica.com/compon... com_frontpage/Itemid,1/ http://www.bozhychi.com.ua/

Thank you so much for posting this! It is exactly what I was looking for! Is there anymore like this? I am looking for childhood favourites such as: "Oi popid hai zelenenkiy..."

I am of Ukrainian descent and was raised by parents and grandparents who sang Ukrainian folk songs. Count me also as one who is not a fan of this authentic kind of singing. I much prfer Ukrainain men's choruses. And no, I'm not a male chauvenist pig, I'm a woman.

I just love this kind of singing.

Well, I liked it anyway!I wonder if some of the unison singing was what put the other poster off - not really whining, but certainly very piercing.I could hear some really interesting stuff in here - some real similarities with English folk and, indeed, Western pop. There were some chordal things that really sounded very current. Cheers!

One further response: that "whining" type of singing has a name; it is called "bilyj holos," and it is an absolute halmark of much (traditional or genuinely authentic) Eastern European and especially Slavic singing. It is, in fact, a highly sophisticated form of singing that is difficult to master, if one is not raised singing in this fashion. I know a number of singers of purely American background who, smitten by the style, struggle and succeed to varying extents to sing in this manner.

Thank u. I concur 100%. And to continue engaging buffvk, I did not invent this particular use of the term "authentic." It is widely used to distinguish the original form of Ukrainian folk music from the Academy-style that developed later, and for which buffvk has a very strong preference. I like the Academy style as well--especially when sitting in a sidewalk cafe across the street from the Opera in Lviv, but I am more passionate about the authentic as the fount of our musical heritage.

It's a pity that you find this style "annoying," "whining" and "disappointing"—these are strong judgments on the music. Such is the original form from which is derived most of the Ukrainian folk music that most of us grew up with. This style of Ukrainian folk music is much closer to the music our Ukrainian ancestors actually heard from their village ensembles, or heard as they sang together in their villages, than the style of Uki folk to which we are accustomed. And for that, it is beautiful.

Hmmm. I love this kind of singing, myself. It's raw and real.

I saw a concert very similar to this one at Toronto's Ukr. Festival in 2007 at Harbourfront also performed by a group from Ukraine, (don't recall the name of the group and don't want to ) and I was very disappointed and could not wait until it ended, since it lasted about 2 1/2 hours! Sorry, I usually love Ukr. singing and dancing, but this type of whining singing is very annoying and I believe that the entire presentation could have been more lively and entertaining and still be authentic.
