Thank you so much for posting this! It is exactly what I was looking for! Is there anymore like this? I am looking for childhood favourites such as: "Oi popid hai zelenenkiy..."

I am of Ukrainian descent and was raised by parents and grandparents who sang Ukrainian folk songs. Count me also as one who is not a fan of this authentic kind of singing. I much prfer Ukrainain men's choruses. And no, I'm not a male chauvenist pig, I'm a woman.

I just love this kind of singing.

Well, I liked it anyway!I wonder if some of the unison singing was what put the other poster off - not really whining, but certainly very piercing.I could hear some really interesting stuff in here - some real similarities with English folk and, indeed, Western pop. There were some chordal things that really sounded very current. Cheers!

One further response: that "whining" type of singing has a name; it is called "bilyj holos," and it is an absolute halmark of much (traditional or genuinely authentic) Eastern European and especially Slavic singing. It is, in fact, a highly sophisticated form of singing that is difficult to master, if one is not raised singing in this fashion. I know a number of singers of purely American background who, smitten by the style, struggle and succeed to varying extents to sing in this manner.

Thank u. I concur 100%. And to continue engaging buffvk, I did not invent this particular use of the term "authentic." It is widely used to distinguish the original form of Ukrainian folk music from the Academy-style that developed later, and for which buffvk has a very strong preference. I like the Academy style as well--especially when sitting in a sidewalk cafe across the street from the Opera in Lviv, but I am more passionate about the authentic as the fount of our musical heritage.

It's a pity that you find this style "annoying," "whining" and "disappointing"—these are strong judgments on the music. Such is the original form from which is derived most of the Ukrainian folk music that most of us grew up with. This style of Ukrainian folk music is much closer to the music our Ukrainian ancestors actually heard from their village ensembles, or heard as they sang together in their villages, than the style of Uki folk to which we are accustomed. And for that, it is beautiful.

Hmmm. I love this kind of singing, myself. It's raw and real.

I saw a concert very similar to this one at Toronto's Ukr. Festival in 2007 at Harbourfront also performed by a group from Ukraine, (don't recall the name of the group and don't want to ) and I was very disappointed and could not wait until it ended, since it lasted about 2 1/2 hours! Sorry, I usually love Ukr. singing and dancing, but this type of whining singing is very annoying and I believe that the entire presentation could have been more lively and entertaining and still be authentic. |
